Ghislain Gouraige Jr., and professor Yanatha Desouvre,

This not-often-told story sheds light on the sacrifices made for Haiti's hard-won independence, overcoming international isolation, persecution, and hostility.
Accompanying this insightful conversation, don't miss a powerful spoken word performance by the esteemed Actor, Activist, and Educator Mecca “Grimo” Marcelin, dressed as Toussaint Louverture, one of the leaders of the Haitian Revolution that shattered the chains of slavery,
leading Haiti to become the 1st independent nation in the Western Hemisphere.

Yanatha on the Panel of The Great American Read on South Florida PBS
The series is the centerpiece of an ambitious multi-platform digital, educational and community outreach campaign, designed to get the country reading and passionately talking about books.
Please join us on May 17th at 6:00 PM at Lynn University at the Amarnick-Goldstein Concert Hall. We will be accepting donations for new/gently used books which will be donated to a local organization that promotes children's literacy. The reception begins at 6:00 PM with light snacks and beverages. Prior to the screening, we will have a reading circle with KidVision Pre-K's, Ms. Penny. Following the screening, guests will have the opportunity to participate in a Q & A discussion moderated by host of Between The Covers, Ann Bocock with special literary guests: authors Elaine Viets and Yanatha Desouvre, literary critic Oline Cogdill, and owner of Murder On The Beach Joanne Sinchuk. What is Black Lily?
Origin: Black Lily was a legendary open mic collective in late 1990's Philadelphia that was started by Grammy award winners Questlove and his bandmates: The Roots. The open mic night started out of necessity to find like minded talent to fill a void that was missing on mainstream radio and in music at that time. Black Lily grew to legendary status and spawned the careers of not only The Roots, but many other multi-platinum acts of the more cerebral neo soul/r&b/hip hop era of the early 2000's including Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Musiq Soulchild, the late J Dilla and many more who have influenced what we listen to today.
What is BLACK LILY UPRISING? Simply put, it’s the inspired continuation of that legendary movement now based in West Palm Beach and focusing on South Florida's gifted music and art scene. Black Lily Uprising makes it's debut during the internationally famous SUNFEST festival week at one of the Palm Beaches hottest art spots: WINE SCENE, which can best be described as part gallery, part ultra lounge, part New York style warehouse.
